Papers, 1894-1977.

This collection contains biographical information, college papers, course notes, photographs, correspondence, scientific correspondence, certificates, reports, articles, book reports, stories, illustrations, and glass slides. Many of the stories are on international events and World War II. Included are course notes and correspondence from fellow Cornell graduate students, Emmeline Moore and Alice Ayr Noyes. There is also scientific correspondence with her co-author, Needham. The remainder of the collection contains scientific articles by peers and glass slides of various insects.

Entomologist and author. Hortense Butler Heywood, a native of Cherokee, Iowa, graduated from Lake Forest College with a B.A. (1903) in entomology and paleontology. Subsequent post-graduate work was done at Chicago University (1904-1905); Berlin University, Germany (1906-1907); and Cornell University (1912-1914). James G. Needham was born on March 16, 1868 in Virginia, Illinois. He studied with John Henry Comstock at Cornell University, 1896-1898. From 1898-1907 he taught biology at Lake Forest University and then returned to Cornell as assistant professor of limnology. In 1914 when Professor Comstock retired, Needham succeeded him as head of the Department of Entomology at Cornell, a position he held until his retirement in 1935.
